First Street Urban Design

Lake Oswego, Oregon

MacLeod Reckord provided planning and design services for the complete redevelopment of two blocks of a major retail/commercial street in downtown Lake Oswego. The street was realigned to eliminate the traditional concrete curb/gutter/sidewalk and replace it with brick paving, lights, and bollards to expand pedestrian access, reflect the City's historic design character, and provide for event closure. Challenges included issues related to capturing the unique character of Lake Oswego in detailing and materials while solving the utilitarian/infrastructure issues. Construction was managed and sequenced to keep businesses open and functioning throughout the process.

This project was the basis of a presentation on innovative streetscape design by Terry Reckord asĀ  part of Portland Metro's "Get Centered" program.
